Greetings to all my fellow hookers and yarn enthusiasts!
I’m Emily Cruz. I am the CEO and freelance designer of EC World Designs. Wow…that sounds quite strange to say it. I am the CEO of my company! Though I’m small, my big dreams make up for it. I am a creator.
I swear, this is going to sound cliché but it is true! It all started out like a dream. I wanted to work for myself and create something for someone. There was instantly a question that plagued my head long ago:
What on earth would I create?
Jack of Many Trades: Focusing on One
Drawing
I love making things with my hands. I love drawing! Something I truly love drawing is the human eye. I love how every eye is unique. In my opinion, and I know many have said and believe this, our eyes are the windows to our souls. You can tell a lot about a person when you look into their eyes.
As much as I love drawing, I still need to practice and perfect my work. I still draw all the time and have filled up so many sketchbooks since I was five years old. I may or may not sell prints of my drawings (and paintings…that really needs work), but for now, I will mostly post my drawings to my Instagram.
Jewelry Design
I am also a jewelry designer. I enjoy wirework and chain maille. Those supplies can get quite pricy, which is why I have kind of calmed down in making jewelry. I may sell what I’ve already made on my website, but for now, I’m taking a break.
Crocheting: My Main Lane
Though I do create other unique forms of art, crocheting has really caught my attention. My mother started me at a young age. I remember watching her crocheting a blanket, as she has made many. Smiling as she watched me observe her, she asked me if I’d like to learn. I jumped at that opportunity!
She taught me the basics: single crochet and chain one. We did a basic square. As lumpy as mine was, it felt so nice to maneuver the hook and how the yarn would slowly move from the ball to the project. This went on mostly in elementary school. Throughout middle school and high school, I was busy with the marching band, academics, and creating my future.
Global Pandemic and Mental Health
The year 2020 started out with a bang. By March, the world was all experiencing the same thing: COVID-19. This pandemic alone had done a number on many individual’s mental health. Luckily, my mother and I rediscovered our hold hobby that I had abandoned for years: crocheting. YouTube tutorials are amazing. I had gotten curious because I got into amigurumi stuffed animals. They are so adorable!
Soon, I got into creating wallets and purses. I was on a roll! I had no idea there was a world out there for crocheters like me! There were countless hookers showing people how to do various kinds of stitches, working with more than one piece of yarn in their hand (I am totally good at this), as well as Tunisian crocheting! Wow! There is a super long hook that looks like a knitting needle, but you crochet with it? Get outta here! I literally just bought a new Tunisian hook set. I’m currently working on a blanket.
Roaming Hooker: Crochet While I Wait
I call myself a hooker. As in, I’m a crochet hooker. I will go out in public with my hooks and yarn and will crochet for hours with a friend at a café. I find it hilarious and fun to say hooker because people raise their eyebrows and think the worse. Then when I pull out my 5 mm hook and some yarn, they breathe a sigh of relief, “Oh! You knit…” they say.
“Ahem, I crochet…I use one hook. Knitting requires two or more needles”
Me, when correcting people
“Ahem, I crochet…I use one hook. Knitting requires two or more needles,” I correct them. I can be a bit persnickety about terms, but then I remember that I shouldn’t expect everyone to know crochet terms. Heck, I’m still learning a lot. I dare not be snooty because people mix up crochet vs. knitting terms. This is indeed yarn crafting. So, I shall craft on!
Whatever the reason you decided to read my blog, I hope that you enjoyed this fantastic adventure. My blog will be updated infrequently. I am sporatic with telling you about my daily adventures in crocheting. I just hope it entertains you.
Stay creative!
